Municipal Prize 1947

This building, completed in 1947, was awarded the Municipal Prize. Together with number 14 of the same avenue, it is part of a group of Estado Novo style listed buildings, in the New State style.

It has 7 floors, topped by a turret with pinnacles. The broad entrance hall is embellished by beautiful paintings, sculptures and stained glass windows. The curved staircase that serves the building is also a unique feature.

The project was designed by the architect Porfírio Pardal Monteiro, a major figure in Portuguese architecture. His work is marked by its large-scale and monumentality and includes historic buildings such as the Cais do Sodré Station, the Instituto Superior Técnico and the National Institute of Statistics, the maritime stations of Alcântara and Rocha do Conde de Óbidos and the Ritz and Tivoli hotels. He received various distinctions, including five Valmor Awards, for the building in Av. da República, 49 (1923), the Vale Flor palace (1928), the house in Av. 5 de Outubro, 207-215 (1929), the church of N. Sra. de Fátima (1938) and the Diário de Notícias building (1940).
